Officer Presence

a. The mere presence of a corrections officer works to deter crime or diffuse a situation.b. Officers’ attitudes are professional and nonthreatening.

Verbalization (Verbal Commands)

a. Officers issue calm, nonthreatening commands.b. Officers may increase their volume and shorten commands in an attempt to gain compliance i.e Short commands might include “Stop,” or “Don’t move.”

Empty Hand Control

a. Soft technique. Officers use grabs, holds and joint locks (including tackling) to restrain an individual.b. Hard technique. Officers use punches and kicks to defend oneself against an individual.

Less-Lethal Methods

a. Blunt impact. Officers may use a nightstick to immobilize a combative person.b. Taser Deployment. Officers may use a taser to immobilize a combative person.

Lethal Force

a. Officers use deadly weapons such as firearms to stop an individual’s actions.    i. Lethal force may only be used when the individual is presenting an immediate threat to life, whether that be your own, another officer’s, or an innocent third party, as well as there being no risk of injury to any bystander should lethal force be employed.    ii. Warning shots should be issued where possible.    iii. Any use of lethal force must follow with an incident report being written.
